Dorien is founder of Gr1p and, as researcher and producer, involved in Gr1p’s first project: a documentary on Amsterdam as Smart City

As an academic researcher, Dorien is interested in political and spiritual countermovements and in the history and politics of the Information Society. She studied the role of Open Source software amongst a group of hackers and squatters in Amsterdam, and spent a year in the San Francisco Bay Area to study the Californian digital society from the 1960s onwards.

In her research, Dorien encounters many different ideas regarding the organizational structure of the internet in political, technical and social respect. In a new project, she wants to bring these ideas together and help translate them into technical and organizational designs for data-exchange platforms. This design needs to guarantee that the relationship between all stakeholders involved – citizens, corporations and governments – is equal and transparent, particularly with respect to questions of data-ownership and control.
